In the Tracks of the 'Cornish Riviera Express' A journey of Rationalisation and Change
by Amyas Crump
For almost sixty years from 1904, a steam hauled 'Cornish Riviera Express' left Paddington for a nonstop run to Plymouth. As was the fashion of the time, slip-coach working allowed a fast service to be provided to destinations en route includingn Weymouth, Minehead and Ilfracombe. After Plymouth the trian continued west to Penzance, again with connecting services to the principal seaside resorts.
This new book from Noodle provides a before and after nostalgic portrait of the London to Plymouth route revealing the many changes that have been wrought to both the main line and branches once served by this legendary service.
