Slot Machines: The History of Cable-Hauled Street Tramways in the British Isles
Cable-haulage of trams is generally associated with steep hills, but Edinburgh in particular, but also Birmingham and parts of London were served by cable-hauled trams on undulating routes of some length. Plus there were four other hill systems dotted around the UK, of which the Great Orme Cable Tramway in Llandudno is the only survivor.
Starting with the first, American, developments of cable-hauling, the various haulage systems are examined, before moving on to the tramways themselves, what led to their demise, and what happened afterwards.
Interesting history, very well illustrated with B&Wphotos, diagrams and drawings.
